Minardi
arrive at this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix safe in the knowledge that
both Mark Webber and temporary team mate Anthony Davidson have solid
experience of the challenging Spa-Francorchamps circuit.
BAR tester Davidson, who made his GP debut at
the last round in Hungary, took a victory here only last year on his
way to the Formula 3 European Cup. He was the class of the field
during wet practice and went on to win the race in style, beating
among others then team mate Takuma Sato.
Webber, meanwhile has less fond memories of
Spa. His hopes of the International Formula 3000 title ended here last
year when he crashed heavily at the entrance to Eau Rouge.
Regardless of their past fortunes at the
track, both men will be looking for a strong performance this weekend
after another solid, if unspectacular, showing at the Hungaroring.
Webber came home 16th, while Davidson's
impressive debut weekend ultimately ended in disappointment when he
spun out in the latter stages of the race.
This weekend he should benefit from an
improved seating position and hopefully some made-to-measure overalls,
after he was forced to borrow those of a somewhat larger mechanic in
Hungary.
The man he replaced for that and this
weekend's race, Alex Yoong, will doubtless be paying close attention
to Davidson's efforts at Spa. However, team boss Paul Stoddart has
assured the Malaysian that he will regain his seat from the following
round in Italy.
Last year at Spa Tarso Marques finished 13th
for Minardi, but the team have not scored a top-finish in Belgium
since 1998 when Shinji Nakano was the last of only eight cars to make
the end of the race.
The 1994 Belgian Grand Prix was Minardi's
most successful, with Pierluigi Martini and Michele Alboreto taking
eighth and ninth places respectively, after the former qualified an
impressive tenth fastest.
