Ihe
2001 F3000 champion Justin Wilson has been taken out of the running to
replace Alex Yoong at Minardi after it became clear that the Brit is too
tall for the Minardi PS02. The 24-year-old was one of the favourites to
replace Yoong should Minardi team boss Paul Stoddart decide to rest the
Malaysian for the next few races in order to allow him time to regain his
confidence, which has taken a serious knock by his failure to qualify for
two of the past three races.
Wilson spent a day and a half recently at Minardi's Faenza base in Italy as
the team worked on his seat fitting. But although the 6'3” Brit felt
comfortable enough in the cockpit of the PS02, he was judged too tall to
meet the safety regulations set out by the FIA, motorsport's governing body.
Naturally Wilson is disappointed at having missed out on the opportunity to
compete in F1 this season with Minardi, but he is hopeful that
this is a good sign that he might to considered for the team, or even
another F1 team next season.
"They took all my measurements so that they can find out what is required to
get me in a car for the future,"
he told Autosport.
"It is nice that they made so much effort and gives me hope
that I will be considered for next year."
Meanwhile other reports have suggested that BAR test driver Anthony Davidson
could also in line for the driver, however according to Yoong's website
Davidson has also refuted this speculation, while CART driver Bryan Herta,
who will be involved in "Thunder in the Park 2" at Donnington Park this
Sunday has not made any reply to the reports linking him.
