“It hasn’t been a bad day. We got through our programme well and with plenty of fuel in the car. We spent time trying to get a balance on both types of Michelin today, but it’s just not happening at the moment. We’ll get a bit more time tomorrow morning to fine-tune the set-up, though, and that should see the times improve. The track is in reasonable shape and cleaned up a lot as the day went on.”

Qualifying

Position: 21 No. of laps: 11
Time: 1 min 11.388 secs Chassis: PS02/04
“I think it was quite a difficult session because everyone waited until the track cleaned up. I thought we might as well go out because we had only a small amount of running on the tyre we were going to use in qualifying. When we did go out, the track was very bad, plus we also had a number of balance changes to do with the new type of tyre. Then Jarno (Trulli) lost his engine and the session was stopped. When it restarted, there was only 20 minutes left, there was a lot of dirt on the track, and I just had to do the best time I could. We got a better balance, although still not perfect for qualifying, but at least I think we have the right tyre for the race tomorrow. We’re not sure, but we think we’re maybe in better shape than others. We’ll see.”

“It was really a frustrating race today. First of all, at the start, we had a problem getting the car off the line. I had to go to first (gear) again and pull away normally, so I was last away by miles. After that, everything was going well until the first Safety Car deployment. I had been up with (Eddie) Irvine and a group of cars in front, but when the Safety Car came out, I was behind Barrichello, and there was some confusion about our track position. After the second Safety Car incident, we thought we were fighting (Mika) Salo for position, but it wasn’t the case. That’s why I got a penalty. All told, a frustrating race, because I felt I drove well. In any event, we now look forward to Monaco.”
