“We had a really good day today. We had two
strong sessions with no problems. We had quite a bit of fuel in for the
first session just to get a feeling for a heavier car. Then we decided to
run with a little bit less fuel in the second session to get a feeling for
qualifying trim. We still have some fuel to take out, which is nice, but
also Michelin have done a really good job by the looks of it, as well. I
like driving on this track and the engineering guys and the mechanics did a
good job, so we’re really satisfied with today. If we can do something like
this in terms of a trouble-free run on Saturday, I would say we could have
maybe our best performance in qualifying here. Obviously, we’ll have to see
what happens. It’s likely to be a different story Saturday, but I hope we
can still do well.” |

“It was a very frustrating day because I damaged
the car when I slid on Irvine’s oil in the second session, with the result
that we were in a slightly difficult position for qualifying. The guys did
an amazing job, however, to get the car ready for the afternoon session. I
had quite a good lap on my second run and was looking forward to the next
two runs. Unfortunately, when I left to start the third run I had hydraulic
problems and had to be pulled back to the pits. This meant we were out on
track very late for my last possible run once the problem had been fixed and
I found Felipe Massa driving in front of me around 15 km/h slower, so there
was no chance of improving my lap time. It’s difficult for everybody here at
Monaco, but I really feel we should have been ahead of Villeneuve. We know
we could have done much better, but it just didn’t happen in the last 15
minutes of the session.” |

“This was a really strong race for us. We knew
after this morning’s warm-up that we were quicker than a number of people in
front of us. We therefore decided to run quite heavy (with fuel) at the
beginning of the race, but also to stop quite early, because although we
were running more weight, we knew we should be able to ‘leapfrog’ quite a
few cars when they made their pit stops. The strategy was working perfectly
and we had eighth place easily in the bag until a tyre problem forced me to
pit for a new set. The team did a great job all weekend and had quite a bit
of damage to contend with – they deserved better than 11th place today. I’m
also sorry we couldn’t deliver a present for Paul (Stoddart), as today is
his birthday, but we definitely tried.” |
